The FSMC Main Table is the central governance body of the Fraser Salmon Management Council (FSMC). Composed of appointed delegates from member First Nations, the Main Table is where Indigenous leaders come together to shape the collective voice of the Fraser watershed Nations in the co-management of Pacific salmon.
Established through the Collaborative Management Agreement (CMA) signed with the Government of Canada, the FSMC Main Table plays a key role in ensuring that First Nations are full partners in fisheries governance. It serves as the primary forum for advancing Indigenous rights, building consensus among member Nations, and guiding the strategic direction of the FSMC.
The FSMC Main Table:
Sets Strategic Direction: The Main Table provides overall leadership and direction to the FSMC, ensuring the organization’s work reflects the values, priorities, and decisions of its member First Nations.
Reviews and Approves Tier 2 Recommendations: It receives advice and recommendations from the Fraser Salmon Management Board (FSMB) and determines whether to endorse shared positions brought forward under the CMA.
Guides Negotiation and Advocacy: The Main Table steers FSMC’s engagement with government, industry, and other stakeholders, ensuring Indigenous voices are heard in key decision-making spaces.
Protects FSC Rights and Governance: It upholds the authority of First Nations to manage Food, Social, and Ceremonial (FSC) fisheries and works to ensure that federal policy and science reflect Indigenous knowledge and law.
Supports Nation-to-Nation Collaboration: The Main Table provides a structure for internal dialogue among Nations, helping to resolve differences and build unity around critical salmon management issues.
